The Newborn Experience

new • moments • captured

Newborns change so quickly so we need to capture every tiny detail to preserve the precious moments of your little one's arrival. With a gentle touch and a keen eye for beauty, I create timeless portraits that you'll cherish for a lifetime. From the softness of their newborn skin to the sweetness of their first yawns, every image captures a memory. Let's create gorgeous images together as we celebrate the joy of your growing family.

let's capture those fleeting moments

Ideally, you reach out to say hello and chat before your little one arrives,  but if you're reading this and already gave birth, that's totally OK too, let's just get you on the books ASAP.
We'll talk about the difference between an in home session and a studio session, any colors or themes you're wanting to incorporate, and then get a tentative date on the books.

1. Say Hello

2. Let's make it happen

Once you're ready to proceed, we'll secure your session date by signing a contract and making a deposit.
The contract will outline the details of our agreement, including the tentative date, time, location, and the services included in your chosen package.
This step ensures that both of us are clear on expectations and helps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

3. ask me Anything

Before the photoshoot, I'll provide you with tips on how to prepare your newborn and your home, if applicable, for the session.
This may include suggestions for feeding and comforting your baby, as well as creating a comfortable and safe environment for the shoot.
I'll also discuss wardrobe options for parents and any props or accessories you'd like to incorporate into the photos.

4. session day!

First, we'll get you settled in, I know newborns require so much stuff. Then we'll talk outfit selections while exploring both your personal items and our client closet for mom and baby. I'll show you the different pre made sets and you can choose your favorites. Whether we're in the studio or at your home, after clothes and set selection, we will move on into a calm and relaxing atmosphere where your baby can be the star.
I'll work patiently and gently to pose your newborn in adorable and artistic ways, capturing their tiny features and sweet expressions.
Whether it's cozy wrapped shots, adorable props, or tender family portraits, I'll ensure that every image reflects the love and joy of this special time.

5. your photographs

After the session, I'll carefully select and edit the best images to ensure they meet my high-quality standards.
Once the editing process is complete, I'll deliver the final images to you via a private online gallery.
You'll have the opportunity to view the photos, download your favorites, and share them with family and friends to cherish for years to come.
If you'd like, I can also assist you with printing and creating beautiful keepsakes, such as albums or canvases, to preserve these precious memories for generations.

The Newborn Process

Hi, I’m Janalee! When I’m not behind the camera, you’ll usually find me chasing adventures with my son, Julian. We spend our days exploring local playgrounds, indoor play gyms, scenic bike paths, sandy beaches, and hidden gems throughout Milwaukee, Lake Country, and southeastern Wisconsin. Watching him grow has given me an even deeper appreciation for how quickly these seasons of life pass—and how meaningful it is to preserve them.

That perspective shapes every newborn session I photograph. I know the tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, first smiles, and quiet moments in your arms won’t last forever. My goal is to create a calm, baby-led experience where you can simply soak in this chapter while I document it with care.

I offer newborn photography in Milwaukee, WI and across Waukesha, Brookfield, Oconomowoc, Mequon, Cedarburg, Madison, Lake Country, and beyond. Whether you choose a cozy studio session or the comfort of your own home, I’ll guide you every step of the way so your experience feels relaxed, natural, and stress-free.

The result is a collection of timeless images that celebrates not only how your baby looked in these first precious weeks, but also the love, connection, and joy that surrounded them from the very beginning.

Notes for Choosing the Perfect Location, Time, Outfits, & More

Planning Your

Keep reading for more details on how to prepare for your newborn session, what to wear, bringing pets, location ideas, and more.

welcome

planning your newborn session

The best time to do newborn sessions is when infants are between 2 to 10 days old. Newborns sleep peacefully and sweetly throughout the first 10 days or so after birth, and they can easily adopt positions that are similar to when they were in the mother's womb. During this time, the most iconic "sleeping" pictures are taken. When you schedule newborn photos within the first ten days, you can benefit from the baby's regular sleeping patterns. I encourage you to book before baby makes his or her arrival. I'll put your due date on my calendar so that we're prepared and when little one arrives, you reach out to let me know and we get something on the books.

the best time to book

seasons

For example, moody leaves and foliage in the fall or bright and colorful florals in the spring. Styling outfits and choosing props will become easier after you have decided on a theme. Shoot times will vary from season to season.

If you don't have a set nursery theme that you want to stick with, consider letting the seasons guide the theme.

Think fresh blooms, pastels, and rain.

spring

Think bright colors, flowers, and sundresses.

summer

Think foliage, warm tones, and cozy layers.

fall

Think snow, snuggling close, and winter wonderlands.

The secret to getting classic newborn pictures flawlessly is by having your baby sound asleep during the photoshoot. A great way to do this is by making the baby take a warm and long bath approximately 1 to 1.5 hours prior to the scheduled session The baby usually gets soothed, relaxed, and sleepy after the bath.

Prior to the session, spend 1.5 to 2.5 hours playing with the baby to try to keep them awake. It is important that your little one must not fall asleep in the car on the way to the location. By keeping them awake, the baby will be exhausted when they arrive at the studio and will easily fall asleep just before the session begins.

baby preparation

sleep

It is normal and totally okay for the baby to poop or wee on my backdrop or anywhere else when performing the poses where they are undressed. I can promise you that it frequently happens! Please bring baby wipes, extra diapers, and a towel with you. I wash all of my backdrops and any materials the baby comes in contact with following each newborn session. Just in case, it's a good idea to have an extra set of clothes for the parents. The person who always gets poop or wee on is typically me, but occasionally it's you!

BABY PREPARATION

Newborns are known for being hungry all the time. Before the photoshoot, make sure your baby is well fed. You don't want them screaming for milk throughout their photoshoot. When you feed your baby just before the session, they will cry less and be more at ease.

Furthermore, a full belly will result in a happy and sleeping baby! Remember that we are aiming for the baby to be fully asleep throughout the session. Please feel free to arrive at the studio a bit early to feed the baby before, especially if you have a longer commute.

After the feeding, make sure to burp the baby. A happy, sleepy baby might quickly become uncomfortable due to gas.

our tips for looking and feeling your best

outfits and style tips

Ideally, bring the baby in a short sleeve (long pants is fine) onsie. Dress your baby with loose clothing or warm fabrics that are simple to unwrap without pulling the layers over the head. This will ensure that we do not wake the baby upon undressing them. No tight socks or vests to prevent marks on their skin.

Don't stress about clothing for baby unless you want to bring anything unique for your baby’s photos. Otherwise, we'll wrap the baby up tight in a colored wrap and photograph him or her in that. Please let me know if there is something special you want to bring so I can plan the set around it.

When choosing outfits for the family, don't try and match—rather compliment each other's outfits with thoughtful color palettes.

style tips for mom

Long, flowy dresses look incredible in photos because of the added movement and texture. We encourage you to opt for a dress as opposed to pants, shorts, or jumpsuits. But if pants are your jam, wear them! Don't forget about the accessories!

Choose a dress over something casual, you won't regret it!

Outfit tips

Check out our ever growing client closet. These pieces are free to use for your session!

I always recommend getting your hair and makeup professionally done. It adds a bit of glam to the day and helps you look and feel your best. The camera really does strip away a lot of makeup, so having a bit extra on is always a good idea. You can have this done right in studio if you'd like!

Professional hair and makeup can help you look and feel your best.

style tips for dad

Dress it up and layer it on. Button-downs, Henleys, sweaters or a nice plain t-shirt will do . Layers also add visual interest and texture, so don't be afraid to get creative and stylish!
Please leave the baseball hats at home dad!

Don't be afraid to dress up a bit.

outfit tips

Ever notice how a haircut, a quick manicure, and a bit of grooming can totally level up your vibe? It's like hitting the refresh button on your look. Treat yourself to some self-care and watch how it boosts your confidence. Because, let's be real, sometimes all you need is a little pampering to feel like a million bucks.

A haircut, manicure, and a little grooming goes a long way.

grooming

Balance, Don't Match: Colors and Tones

leave it: Graphics and logos

Avoid: Tennis Shoes, Baseball Hats, Sunglasses

leave it: Spray Tans

Avoid: Bright Colors (Red, Orange, Neons)

LEAVE IT: Busy PATTERNS

final style notes: things to avoid and outfit suggestions

Please note that the studio will be warm. Babies enjoy being warm, so turning up the heat (no matter the season) keeps them happy and asleep. You are more than welcome to bring drinks and a change of clothes in case you get too hot.

We'll stop when your little one needs a break. If your baby gets fussy, this is completely normal. Do not worry. We will most definitely stop if the baby needs to be fed or have their diaper changed. Most infants require at least one feeding during their session. Remember that looking that cute is hard work!

other notes

It could seem overwhelming to include older siblings in your newborn's photographs, but you'll be happy you did! When it comes to siblings, I advise having dad or another relative bring them at the start of the session. Once the family and their share of the session is finished, they are free to leave. Newborn sessions generally take 1-3 hours and this can become too long especially for young children (and dads sometimes too).
